Using carrageenan to induce edema in the rat paw, it was found that Aloe vera gel had anti-inflammatory activity. It had an inhibitory action on the arachidonic acid pathway via cyclooxygenase. Aqueous and chloroform extracts of Aloe vera gel contain compounds that reduce carrageenan-induced edema.
