VITAMIN C - Disease Prevention
This article reviews the role of vitamin C in disease prevention. There is an extensive amount of research on vitamin C. Vitamin C can lower the presence of nitrite in the upper gastrointestinal tract because it is a good scavenger of nitrate. Populations that consume regularly vegetables and fruit have a lower risk of gastric cancer and it is thought in part, by this scavenging effect if vitamin C on nitrate. Vitamin C has excellent antioxidant properties. Many free radical reactions that may initiate the cancer and cardiovascular disease are limited by the presence in tissues and cells of adequate amounts of specific antioxidants which include vitamin C. Other antioxidants may increase the effectiveness of vitamin C in lowering endogenous oxidative reactions. Vitamin C is an essential component of enzymes involved in electron transport. The cytochrome P450 systems, myelo-and other peroxidases, collagen, tyrosine hydroxylation and cholesterol and steroid metabolism. Vitamin C restores tocopherol from the radical-tocopherol intermediate. In part, the dramatic reduction in the incidence of gastric cancer and of hypertension leading to stroke is associated with increased availability of fresh fruits and vegetables and a decreased need of salting and pickling as a means of food preservation. Vitamin C plays a major role in lowering the risk of gastric cancer and in parts of Asia, cancer of the esophagus. Vitamins by itself or in coordination with other nutrients may have an inhibiting effect in bacterial and viral infection. There is increasing support for the concept that optimal nutritional and optimal defense systems to fight infection and chronic disease including coronary heart disease and cancer involve higher amounts of the RDA of vitamin C and also other antioxidants such as vitamin E. A higher intake of these beneficial and protective micronutrients appears to be perfectly safe. It is said that about 30% of Americans take vitamin supplements. There is few case histories of adverse effects to large scale of vitamin supplementation that seems to be occurring in North America. Recurrent literature on nutrition and health suggests that select vitamin supplementation may be in order for many people. who for various reasons do not consumed the recommended 5 to 9 vegetables and fruits per day. There is great concern worldwide but particularly in the United States with high and increasing costs of diagnosis and treatment of major diseases from the common cold and other infectious diseases to chronic diseases. The application of current knowledge in optimal nutrition and health, including an optimal intake of essential micronutrients such as vitamin C, could go a long way in health promotion and disease prevention. This new dietary approach, along with moderate exercise, would have a major impact in controlling and actually lowering the costs of medical care.

VITAMIN C - Colds, Cancer and AIDS
This is a discussion with Linus Pauling regarding the use of vitamin C. Pauling notes there is epidemiologic data suggesting lower levels of vitamin C increases the risk to cancer. He also discusses his work with Dr. Ewen Cameron in cancer patients using 10 gms of vitamin C either intravenously or orally which extended survival time and quality of life. Pauling notes patients who have cancer should take as much vitamin C as possible. If they take too much, it will have a laxative effect. He warns that when patients are taking high dose vitamin C they should not stop suddenly since enzymes in the body change the vitamin C to certain oxidation products. The vitamin C level will drop almost to 0 and it may take a week or 2 to get back to normal where these enzymes are no longer functioning. Stopping vitamin C supplementation suddenly can also increase the risk of colds. The Mayo Clinic studies that were supposed to have replicated Dr. Cameron's work did not. Patients did not take the vitamin C for the rest of their lives, only for 2 months. There is epidemiologic evidence that individuals who have taken vitamin C in a study of more than 11,000 Americans resulted in a 42% less mortality rate from cardiovascular disease than those who did not take the supplements. The cancer death rate was reduced by 38% and diabetes and other diseases were reduced 20%. In the female side of the study there was 32% less mortality from heart disease, 20% less from cancer and 15% less from other diseases. The optimal doses according to Pauling is not exact but he believes it is approximately 10 to 12 gms per day. Much lower doses can still improve health in a very significant way. The degree of benefit may improve up to about 6 gms or so and then it starts to plateau off. The mutation resulting in the body not being able to produce its own vitamin C occurred in primates (including human beings) and guinea pigs approximately 40 million years ago. In general, most animals produce approximately 12 gms per day per 150 pounds of body weight. Dr. Pauling uses 4« gm, or 1 teaspoon, in a mixture of 50/50 ascorbic acid and sodium ascorbate. He also notes his colleagues have found vitamin C to be beneficial in treating AIDS patients. Individuals have found vitamin C prevents the virus from multiplying. The amount equivalent to what a person gets by taking 10 gms of vitamin C per day was the concentration needed to inhibit the replication. He believes vitamin C should be an adjunct treatment along with conventional therapies for AIDS.
