Protective Effect of Multivitamin Supplementation on DNA Damage in Lymphocytes
In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study involving 80 healthy volunteers who were non-users of dietary supplements and medications, results indicate that daily use of multivitamin supplements may exert a protective effect against DNA damage in lymphocytes. The participants were randomized to receive a multivitamin capsule or placebo daily for 4 weeks. Oxidative DNA damage and the resistance of DNA to H(2)O(2)-induced DNA strand breaks in lymphocytes were analyzed ex vivo at baseline and intervention end. Supplementation with the vitamin complex was found to significantly decrease the levels of DNA damage. Only vitamin complex supplementation was able to decrease H(2)O(2)-induced DNA breakage. Thus, the authors of this study conclude, "Our data suggest that the consumption of some vitamins may reduce the effects of oxidative DNA damage and may be useful for attaining healthy aging."
