CIRRHOSIS - Soybean Lecithin

Cirrhosis is the fourth leading cause of death among city dwellers between the ages of 25 and 65. Research at the Bronx Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York shows promise utilizing soybean lecithin as a preventive agent. Baboons were fed three tablespoons of soy lecithin daily over a ten year period. Six of the baboons ate standard baboon diets while the other six ate diets comparable to alcoholics, as well as consuming alcohol up to 50% of their calories, equivalent to eight cans of beer per day. Seven of the nine unsupplemented baboons developed severe liver scarring, two developed full blown cirrhosis. In those baboons consuming alcohol and lecithin there was insignificant scarring and none developed cirrhosis after eight years on the diet. The protective mechanisms are unclear. Lecithin is a phospholipid important in the cell membranes of plants and animals. Lecithin may also break down fibrous tissue formed when alcohol converts liver lipocytes into scar tissue "factories". The lecithin fed baboons had significantly smaller percentages of transformed lipocytes than baboons not given the substance. Human trials are being planned.
